Today we mark the one year anniversary of the darkest day in South Asia’s history. On November 26, 2008, ten misguided young men who were being controlled by a command center in Pakistan reached Mumbai in a small fishing boat. Before entering the shores of Mumbai these terrorists had already killed the captain and crew of the boat.
HBO today televised a documentary narrated by Fareed Zakaria, a Mumbai born American journalist. ‘Terror in Mumbai.’ an extremely informative documentary compresses three days of mayhem – three days when ten Pakistani young men who had mobile phones and machine guns killed 170 people and wounded 300 more, sending shockwaves of fear around the world. I was horrified watching this 360-degree view of the terrorist act, recounted in harrowing detail – especially because these young men came from a country, I call my own.
Phone calls intercepted and recorded between these men sent on ‘jihad’ and their commander in Pakistan were heart wrenching. And, so was statement of Kasab, the only gunman who survived. As this documentary depicted, these young Pakistan men received instructions over the telephone, leaving a trail of evidence that led Indian investigators to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a group fighting Indian rule in the disputed region of Kashmir. Pakistan’s military and ISI were also accused of backing the militants, a charge Islamabad has denied. New Delhi named 38 people in an 11,000-page charge sheet filed in a Mumbai court in February.
At some level I feel sorry for these lost souls- poverty stricken, uneducated young men who were fooled by conniving leaders of LeT and other fundamentalist organizations, However, I have no sympathies for their leaders- whomsoever they maybe. These characters have eroded the Pakistani society and have pushed us in a state of profound crisis.
I can’t forgive them because these morally corrupt LeT leaders have pushed us in a crisis that is complex, and multi-dimensional with facets that touch every aspect of our lives: our health and livelihood, the quality of our environment and our social relationships, our ideology, economy, and politics. It is a crisis of intellectual, moral, and spiritual dimensions; a crisis of a scale and urgency unprecedented in Pakistan’s 63 year history..
As a Pakistani, I stand today with my head down – embarrassed that my country has been hijacked by illiterate and irrational people – from self styled clergy to the army. These men will do anything they can to pursue their fantasy. Even if that means hoodwinking simple, young Pakistani men and murdering of innocent civilians on both sides of Indo-Pak border.
Undoubtedly, India is a belligerent regional hegemony and we must protect Pakistan’s sovereignty, independence and dignity. But these wayward leaders who exploit religion and patriotism have managed to drown the voices of reason and rationality. With Petro dollars supported tribal and Wahabi influence Pakistan’s social structures and behavior patterns have become so rigid that this country can no longer adapt to changing situations, it is unable to carry on the creative process of cultural evolution.
Read response to my earlier blogs and you will find an eerie uniformity of opinion. Even those who are tolerant, progressive, democratic are willing to condone terrorists in the name of Islam and nation. This uniformity and lack of self-reflection are clear signs that our society is in the process of disintegration.
As I watched this documentary I was reminded of acts of terrorism Pakistanis witness everyday- every Pakistani is a victim. Unless Pakistan’s progressive and democratic forces are willing to take on the retrogressive elements we will concede our right to opinion, education and way of life. Fundamentalists will prohibit freedom of expression and use all coercive apparatus to crush opposition. Education will be discouraged and whatever little is allowed, will be subverted by distortion of curricula. You can argue what is new- it has always been the case? It is the intensity that will change. We are not talking about FATA or NWFP or the tribal areas. This monster is already in cosmopolitan cities like Karachi and Lahore.
I was horrified to hear the Punjabi accent of those controlling these 10 terrorists. I was horrified when these young men were ordered to shoot hostages- I can’t express my anger and fear.
We, the Pakistani people should seek forgiveness from the families of those who lost loved ones in Mumbai. We should let the people of Mumbai know that we are just as much a victim. We should let them know that we don’t condone these acts of violence.
We, the Pakistani people should let our rulers know that they can’t indulge in adventurism like LeT anymore. We should let ISI and MI know that we will not pay their salary if they do not immediately cease all relations with all terrorist outfits.
Update: To all those who have suggested that my article assigns direct responsibility for Mumbai to the Government of Pakistan, let me be clear that is not what I am saying. One can apologize for acts done in the name of one’s nation, or in this case one’s religion, by their governments, or by their citizens, without assuming direct and absolute responsibility; just as many anti-war Americans have gone to Iraq and Afghanistan and apologized to the people for the war waged upon them by the U.S. government. I think here of the group September 11th Families for a Peaceful Tommorrow who have actively protested the war in Afghanistan and have even travelled there to apologize directly to the people of Afghanistan. It takes a big heart and courage to take such a position. Pakistanis should muster up the courage and do the same.

Indian elements remain present in Balochistan and Fata.
Basit said the interior ministry had evidence to prove the presence
and will make a sovereign decision of who to share it with.
He said India had not requested for the evidence as yet and added
that such a highly sensitive issue would not be conducted through
the media.
India’s demands regarding the Mumbai attacks before returning to
the negotiating table are untenable as true dialogue does not come
with preconditions, Basit said.
This is a sign that India is not serious about restoring peace in
the region, he said.
The Kashmir issue’s resolution is key to peace in South Asia, he

I am actually very happy about the partition of 1947. otherwise these shit heads would have been born as my fellow coutry men. Bollywood is the second biggest film industry right after Hollywood, and even Pakistans best friend wants to mend her ties with India through the BRIC summit, and now again drafting the copenhagen plan with India. USA has signed their nuke deal with us and now yesterday only even russia signed a simillar but better pact with us. Other major developing nations like the South Africa Republic and Brazil have also showed interest in working closely with India.
Last year when all other major nations of the world were hit by the recession India recorded a growth of 6.7 percent and guess what according to the recent forbes rich list India has 48 billionaires as compared to 79 from China and yet the cummulative wealth of Indian billionaires is almost double than that of China.
So to sum it up all our economic position is pretty much on your FACE.
and i feel sorry to tell you friends that India is not in a position where it can afford to be afraid of any country let alone Pakistan. I hope you remember it well that right after the 26/11 last year india was contemplating an offensive against pakistan and how the entire world had requested India to bunk this plan fear pakistans eradication from the global map.

As far as your claim of a 9/11 repetition is concerned i would like to tell you that your OWN GOVERNEMENT has agreed to the fact that the terrorists have used the soil of Pakistan for this. And yes last but not the least, issues of babri masjid and Kashmir. let me deal with them one by one.
As far as Kashmir is concerned I think it does not belong to either Pakistan or India. It belongs to the kashmiri mass and i blame my government for not initiating a refferandum in the state asking for their own opinions clarifying their stand. And in case Kashmiri people claims the right to self determination, the democratic principles should be respected and Kashmir should be liberated. And if we are to blame anyone due to the crisis prevalent in Kashmir both the states of Pakistan and India are to be blamed equally. They are pulling it from both sides but the people suffering the pain of being stretched on either side is the local Kashmiri.
Now coming to the Babri Masjid Masacre, it was another black day in the history of India when the mosque was demolished, it was a clear violation of the principle of secularism that the Constitution of India stood for. But that does not mean India is abd as a whole or Hindus dont care for Muslim sentiments or even that Muslims are not safe in India. Because the Indian mass as a whole have reacted strongly against this crime. Look at the stage of BJP in the Indian polity after the Gujarat Riots. people all over the nation have voted them out of power and even the liberhan Commitee report have openly condemned the invovement of people like Advani and Vajpayee with the uprising. That goes on to show how we actually believe in Secularism.
You must get me right that I am not Anti-Pakistan or Anti-Muslim. After the demolishion of the Babri Masjid there were widespread riots all over the nation and I was a boy of five at that time. My home is in a densely muslim populated locality and on one night we actually took shelter in our neighbours house in Kolkata. I have grown up with Muslim friends and very recently I have made some Pakistani friends as well.
It is staright boss………..we should not be fighting against each other but we should be fighting jointly against the extremist groups and in this process if Pakistan denies to co-operate then they will have to face the consequences.

You know that it is not so impossible as much you are making it sound like for 10 terrorists to sneak into any nation. However in case you really want to put that as a major point i would just like to tell you that similar things have happened elsewhere, including your country. We have already witnessed Munich olympics, 9/11, terrorist attacks on the pakistani military quarters.

one more thing is the Kashmir issue and you are not the only Kashmiri so you do not represent the collective veiw of Kashmir. Why i understand that Kashmir is still happy with India is because more than 50% of Kashmiris had turned up for our general elections this year. So that clearly goes on to show that there is a major fraction of Kashmiris who believes in Indian Democracy.
And that last thing may sound a little repetitive to you but i would seriously urge you to look at things beyond the religious line. IT is not about hindus, muslims jews christians and sikhs. If at all any country deserves liberation then it deserves on grounds of right to self determination and not any religion.
You again said that the Hindu muslim rivalry is historic but i dont see any history that testifies your statement. When the turks came to India they brought islam with them. many of the Indian origin accepted it and many resisited it. Only a section of the Indian princely States under the Rajputana had made this distinction of religious kingdoms. But that surely does not speak of Entire India. And even with time many rajput famillies also enterred into matrimonial alliances with the then mughal empire.
Why is it that a person like you cannot see the alliances but only the diferences. The person whom you refer to as the Father of the Nation, Muhammad Ali jinnah in the very first day of Pakistan’s assembly meet said it that he visioned pakistan to be a secular country.

To Combat Economic limitations we see EU shaping up forgeting all boundaries. Militancy not just causes threat to human life and property it also effects national economies in a greatly. The best example will be Kashmir, look at the the downfall of the tourism industry in Kashmir after all these war.
Our actions dont speak in favour of imparting justice to humanity and national resources from economic point of view. look at the trade disruptions between India and Pakistan.

While the Indian Army has announced that it is ready to open a t-front war against Pakistan and China,the Army Headquarters at New Delhi forget that the Indian government and its spy agencies like RAW have already imposed a secret war against both Pakistan and China and certain credible proofs of the same have started surfacing both in China and Pakistan but due to certain unknown reasons, both Beijing and Islamabad are not taking up the issue officially with India or the global community, perhaps to maintain a calm in the region.

Pakistani intelligence authorities have also detected that RAW was even involved in Monday’s carnage at Karachi in which, after a suicidal attack on a procession, through a well calculated and pre-planned exercise, a hell of fire was unleashed in the top commercial area of the city which caused huge financial loss, estimated to be over 5 billion rupees in less than a five hours’ time. The Daily Mail’s investigations indicate that the authorities have discovered certain potassium chlorate based explosives, manufactured by Vaigai Industries, Madurai district of Tamil Nadu India.The Daily Mail’s investigations reveal that the ISI and Pakistan Army started discovering the proofs of comprehensive Indian involvement when a military operation was launched against miscreants in Baluchistan province, a few years back. These investigations indicate that the Pakistani law enforcing agencies found highly credible evidence, proving that the Indians were not only giving comprehensive financial support to the miscreants in Baluchistan but were also providing them with huge caches of all sorts of weapons and other military equipments. The Daily Mail’s findings further indicate that owing to the US pressure to keep increasing friendly ties with India, the Gilani government also preferred to avoid taking up the issue of Indian involvement in Baluchistan with New Delhi. New Delhi—An outrageous feud has erupted amongst the top brass of India Army as two top Generals, the chief, General Deepak Kapoor, and his putative successor and the Eastern Command boss, Lt General V.K. Singh have locked horns over the issue of corruption scams in the army , reveal the findings of The Daily Mail.
According to the findings of The Daily Mail, the difference between the Indian army Chief General Kapoor and the Chief of Army’s Eastern Command, Lt. General V.K Singh, who is the senior-most Lieutenant General, were emerging for the past few months after the inquiries into a military land scam began. These finding indicate that this tension between the 2 top general of Indian army reached to the extreme when a Court of Inquiry, convened by the Eastern Army Commander who is based in Fort William in Calcutta, started the proceedings and recommended for the sacking of Army Chief, General Kapoor’s Principal Staff Officer (PSO) and Military Secretary, Lt Gen. The Daily Mail’s investigations further indicate that the Court of Inquiry, presided over by Commander 4 Corps, based at Tezpur-based, Lt Gen. K.T. Parnaik, had forwarded its findings to Lt Gen. Singh. Based on the findings and on consultations with the Judge Advocate General (JAG) in his command, the eastern army commander recommended the “termination of services” of Lt Gen. Prakash because of his alleged involvement in a land scam case. The army sources say that this situation has paralyzed the entire military establishment as the scuffle between the 2 bigwigs of the Indian Army is rising day by day with Army Chief trying to show his muscles to Commander Eastern Command and resisting JAG branch’s recommendations while Commander Eastern Command sticking to the set rules and procedures.
The Daily Mail’s investigations further reveal that the Indian Defence Minister, who trying hard to stay away from this controversy over the corruption scam of the Generals of the Indian army, held a confidential meeting with his Army Chief General Kapoor on the eve of Christmas and asked General Kapoor to be easy over the matter of his PSO Lt Gen. Prakash. The sources say that upon this Gen. Kapoor demurred and defended his confidant but failed to convince the Defence Minister.
These investigations further indicate the while the report of the Court of Inquiry was being “studied and analysed”, another probe from the central command brought out “the involvement without blaming” of the military secretary in awarding a Rs 1.7-crore contract to a north Bengal-based realtor, Dilip Aggarwal.
Brigadier (Rtd) M.K Singh, a former Indian army officer and is one way or the other, associated to the state of affairs, upon contacting by The Daily Mail said that it was all indicative of a serious communication gap between Army Headquarters and the Eastern Command, a fully operational authority whose area of responsibility covers the maximum length of international borders. According to Brigadier Singh, after the report of the Court of Inquiry (CoI) was hand-delivered from Calcutta at 9.30 on the morning of December 23, Wednesday, Army Chief Kapoor was summoned for an unscheduled meeting by the Defence Minister in his office and he discussed the matter with General Kapoor for about two hours but general Kapoor remained stick to defend ‘his’ men and the meeting ended with no positive outcome.
Brigadier Singh says that there was cold war going on between general Kaporr and the Fort William boss Lt. General V.K Singh for the past few months over some personal issues. He says that since Gen. Singh had convened a Court of Inquiry that indicted Lt Gen. Prakash in the land case. Gen. Kapoor felt that the Eastern Commander did not have the authority to summon the army chief’s principal staff officer and he did so with ill-intentions. He further said that Lt Gen. V.K. Singh, whose age was caught in a discrepancy, was bypassed earlier for the post of Vice-Chief of the Army staff and somehow blamed General Kapoor for it and that is perhaps from where the row between the two began.
The Daily Mail’s findings reveal that a meeting between Defence Minister and Army Chief General Kapoor was held in the afternoon of December 24 after the minister had returned from Hyderabad. This meeting lasted for 40 minutes. During the meeting the Defence Minister and the army Chief discussed the Eastern Command’s recommendation to “terminate the services” of Prakash over the alleged Rs 300-crore land scam in north Bengal. Sources in the defence Ministry say that Minister Antony sought a summary of the investigation and the recommendations and directed that the military secretary be prevailed upon to put in his papers to avoid further embarrassment to his ministry and the army.
The Daily Mail findings suggest that Gen. Kapoor protested and defended his PSO’s position and pleaded to the Defence Minister that the Eastern Command under Lt Gen. Singh, who was the convening authority of the court of inquiry that has indicted the military secretary, has taken an “undue interest” in investigating Lt Gen. Prakash.
The military secretary was called as a witness to the court and the eastern commander does not have authority to investigate him or recommend action against one of the eight principal staff officers.
The Daily Mail’s findings further indicate that the army Chief suggested that the recommendation to “terminate the services” in other words, cashier or sack the military secretary should be toned down to “administrative action” that could involve cutting his benefits but will not drape an officer with such a long career in ignominy but the minister did not agree to it and instead conveyed that Lt Gen. Prakash should be persuaded to put in his papers if he does not do so voluntarily.
These findings indicate that the next day, December 25, Gen. Kapoor visited the defence minister at his residence, ostensibly to wish him on Christmas. Staff at the defence minister’s residence expected the meeting to last about 30 minutes or so. But it ended after 10 minutes in a very cold manner.
The Daily Mail’s investigations reveal that during the time of the first unscheduled meeting, the Defence Minister was not properly briefed about the second investigation in Lucknow by a Major General.
That investigation indicted seven officers, including a Major General, in the Ranikhet Kumaon Regimental Centre land scam while Military Secretary Lt Gen. Prakash is the Colonel Commandant of the Kumaon Regiment. It was a double whammy for the Army Chief General Kapoor and his Principal aide.
The defence analysts here at New Delhi believe that this state of affairs where the Chief of Army Staff is patronizing the officers that have been proved guilty of corruption, the Indian Army is bound suffer badly.
They suggest that general Kapoor should either be removed or be asked for a volunteer retirement from the service to save the image and reputation of the institution that is already suffering from big blows of corruption
